Minnesota Spring Storm Prep: How to Protect Your Roof, Siding, Gutters, and Windows Before the Weather Hits

Minnesota skips the warm-up when it comes to storms. One afternoon it’s sunny and 60 degrees, and by evening the sky turns green and your phone is buzzing with severe weather warnings. After months of freeze-thaw cycles and temperature extremes, your home’s exterior is already worn down before the first spring storm even arrives.

The good news is that a little attention now goes a long way. Here’s what to look at before storm season gets going to make sure your roof, siding, and gutters are ready to withstand the weather.

Start With Your Roof

Your roof takes the brunt of everything Minnesota throws at it, and winter is particularly hard on shingles. Before spring storms arrive, take a walk around your home and look up. Binoculars work well for a thorough ground-level check. Here’s is what to look for:

  • Shingles: look for curling, cracking, buckling, or missing shingles. Shingle damage is common after a winter of repeated freezing and thawing and can lead to water leaks if left unaddressed.
  • Ice dam damage: pay attention to the eaves and the ridge line. If you had significant ice dams this past winter, check for displaced shingles or a damaged drip edge. Both can leave your roof vulnerable when heavy spring rains arrive.
  • Flashing: the metal strips around your chimney, skylights, and vents are designed to keep water out at the seams. If flashing has lifted or deteriorated, water will find its way in, usually during the first real downpour of the season.
  • Sagging or structural stress: any visible dips or uneven roof lines along the roof deck may indicate damage from heavy winter snow loads.

If you are unsure what you are looking at, that is okay. A professional roofer will catch what a ground-level look misses, including granule loss, nail pops, and pipe boot seals that have cracked. These are small problems now. Left alone, they become big ones.

Check Your Siding and Windows

Wind-driven rain is a different animal than ordinary rain. It drives sideways into every gap, crack, and deteriorated seal it can find. A little window and siding prep can go a long way. Here’s what to look for and some easy next steps to take:

  • Siding: walk your home’s perimeter and look for loose, cracked, or displaced panels. Check the caulking around windows, doors, and trim. Caulk that has pulled away or cracked over winter is an open invitation for water intrusion. Re-caulk any gaps before they become moisture problems behind the wall. Inspect corner boards and J-channel for separation or damage.
  • Windows: inspect the weather stripping around your windows and replace any seals that have worn down, as they are far less effective at keeping wind-driven rain out. Also ensure your windows fully close.

Check Your Gutters

Clean gutters are more important than most homeowners realize. A clogged gutter during a heavy spring rainstorm cannot move water away from your home, so it backs up, overflows, and often runs straight down your foundation wall. Gutter issues can lead to water damage in basements, wood rot along the fascia, soil erosion around the foundation, and costly repairs that go well beyond a simple gutter cleaning.

Here is what to check before storm season:

  • Clear out winter debris: remove leaves and any sediment built up.
  • Check for ice damage: look for sections that pulled away from the fascia or were bent out of shape by ice.
  • Test the flow: run water through the system to confirm it moves freely and that downspouts are directing water well away from the house.
  • Inspect gutter guards: if you have them, verify they made it through winter intact. A damaged gutter guard can trap debris.
