We Specialize in These Types of
Cedar Roof Roof Replacements
Cedar Shake Roofing
Cedar shakes are a natural wood roofing material, known for their thick, textured profile and rustic charm. Most shakes today are machine-split rather than hand-split, though true hand-split shakes are still available if you want to go that route. They feature a split face that gives them a natural texture, so no two pieces on your roof will look exactly the same.
Cedar Shingle Roofing
Cedar shingles are cut on both sides, producing a thinner, more uniform appearance. If shakes are the rustic choice, shingles are the clean, classic option, a great fit for homeowners who want cedar’s natural warmth without as much texture.

The Difference a Cedar Roof Can Make
The Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau is the certification and standards body behind every Certi-label® cedar shake and shingle. They offer:

Certigrade® Shingles: This type of smooth-sawn, architecturally uniform cedar shingle is preferred for its natural, tailored appearance and is used on both traditional and modern residential and non-residential structures.

Certi-Split® Handsplit & Resawn Shakes: This high-quality shake features a rough split face and a sawn back. It is popular on traditional, ranch, and vacation homes, as well as on non-residential structures designed to blend with natural and/or rustic surroundings.

Certi-Sawn® Tapersawn Shakes: A Certi-Sawn® red cedar shake is sawn on both faces and is thicker than a shingle. Many homeowners prefer the more defined shadow line of the heavier material.

Cedar Roof FAQs
What is the difference between cedar shakes and cedar shingles?
Cedar shakes are made by splitting the wood along its natural grain rather than cutting it with a saw. Some types are still split by hand with traditional tools, but most are produced with modern equipment today. The split surface creates more variation between pieces than you’d get from a smooth, machine-cut product.
Cedar shingles are cut on both sides to produce a thinner, more uniform surface. While shakes lean rustic and textured, shingles lean clean and classic, a more refined option for homeowners who want the warmth of cedar with a more refined look.
What are the pros and cons of cedar roofing?
Cedar has a lot going for it, but like any roofing material, it comes with trade-offs.
What We Like About Cedar Roofing:
- Renewable and biodegradable: Cedar is a natural material that breaks down over time.
- Long-lasting with proper care: According to the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau, a properly installed and maintained cedar roof can last up to 30 years, however this depends on your environment and other factors.
- Unique appearance: Because each shake is split rather than sawn, no two pieces look exactly alike, giving every cedar roof its own natural character.
What to consider
- Higher Installation and Repair Costs: Cedar shakes and shingles cost more to install and repair than asphalt shingles.
- More Maintenance Required: As a natural wood product, cedar needs regular upkeep, including cleaning and moss removal, to reach its full lifespan.
How does cedar perform in Minnesota's climate?
The weight of winter snow cover usually isn’t the concern with cedar in Minnesota; moisture is. Moss and algae are more common issues here, especially on shaded, north-facing roofs or on homes surrounded by mature trees. Minnesota’s humid summers and long winters give moisture more time to linger in the wood, creating conditions that moss thrives in.
According to the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau, heavy moss buildup can cause water to back up on the roof enough to run over the top of the shakes. Moss retains soil and moisture that can damage the wood. That’s why we recommend removing moss buildup as soon as it’s noticeable.
How do I maintain my cedar roof?
Cedar rewards regular care, and most of it is straightforward. Here’s what the USDA Forest Products Laboratory and the Cedar Shake & Shingle Bureau recommend:
- Keep debris off the roof. Overhanging branches, leaves, and needles trap moisture against the wood and promote decay. Clearing them regularly helps your roof reach its full lifespan.
- Watch for moss and algae, and don’t let them build up.
- Go easy on power washing. It can strip away the wood fibers that protect your roof and shorten its lifespan.
- Never use a waterproof sealant on a cedar roof. Cedar needs to breathe, and a waterproofer or sealant traps moisture that would otherwise evaporate, doing more harm than good.
- A breathable finish is different, and reapplying it when it’s due helps. If your roof has a water-repellent preservative or a semitransparent stain, both penetrating finishes that let the wood breathe, it’ll need reapplication periodically, generally after the wood has had a few dry days and before the moisture content gets too high.
How does cedar hold up to fire and hail?
Cedar roofing uses the same fire classification system (Class A, B, and C) as asphalt, and metal roofs. Cedar also performs well against hail. Independent testing under the UL-2218 impact-resistance standard, used across the roofing industry, has shown that cedar shakes and shingles withstand significant impact with minimal damage.
Do cedar shakes cost more than regular asphalt shingles?
Yes. Cedar roofs are made from natural cedar, and the split surface of a cedar shake requires extra care and skill during installation. These factors make cedar roofing more expensive than asphalt shingle roofing.
